It was a hot hot weekend for the Auckland Target Championships to be hosted by Shore Archery Club. There was some nail-biting that went on beforehand as we waited for the results of a Covid-19 scare to come through, but luckily for us (and for those who travelled from out of town) there were no restrictions in place and we were free to come and shoot.

Saturday was a double 72-arrow round, morning and afternoon. Some great results were had by all – including Regan Walters of Franklin Archery Club who broke his own 50m Mens Senior Barebow record with a magnificent score of 604. This is incredible, as Regan is now the first archer in NZ to crack the 600 score in this round. Well done Regan!

Sunday was match-play: individual in the morning and mixed-teams in the afternoon. Individual archers shot at their distance from the day before, whereas in the afternoon some changes were made. Ryley (a cadet who normally shoots at 60m) opted to shoot up in the 70m open recurve division, and Jessley Yee (also cadet who shoots 60m) opted to join his brother down at the youth round in order to make up a team.

The youth archers were put at 18m with Barebow on a full 80cm face, and Recurve on 80cm spots, and all were new to Mixed Teams. They had a really great time.

Huge thanks to our admin team, Shore Archery Club volunteers, and our wonderful Judges and DoS (Kathy Barclay, Elizabeth Andrew and Clive Hudson), as well as Dale Griffiths who was somewhat roped into putting on his judge candidate shirt on Sunday in order to help out with our match-play. Champion work, guys! Much appreciated.

A note on the results:

Archers had to shoot both days (Saturday and Sunday) to be eligible to claim medals for both Saturday and Sunday.

Archers from outside the district could claim match-play medals, but not Target championship medals (Saturday), so certificates were awarded for their placings.

Trophies were also awarded for the highest-scoring archer in Auckland for the following divisions:

Men’s Barebow: Regan Walters, Franklin Archery Club

Women’s Barebow: Meike Voigt, Mountain Green Archery Club

Men’s Recurve: Ben McLean, Auckland Archery Club

Women’s Recurve: Shanaya Kasturiarachi, Mountain Green Archery Club

Congratulations guys!

Thanks also to Cushla Matheson for the photos.
